DXA Body Testing

A DEXA or (DXA) Body Scan is the most accurate and cost-effective method available to analyze body composition. Providing 99% accuracy, this low-range X-ray exam goes beyond a traditional scale to provide sophisticated details about your wellness.

THE DEXA CAN SEE WHAT YOU CAN'T

One of the biggest points of evaluation provided by the DEXA Scan is Visceral Fat (VAT). This is the "hidden fat" that surrounds your vital organs. Too much visceral fat can contribute to secondary illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, and hormonal imbalances.

The Dexa Body Scan can easily and accurately measure:

  • Body Fat
  • Lean Mass
  • Visceral Fat or VAT*
  • Bone Density**

* Visceral Fat readings may not be available for some clients with a high accumulation of body fat in their Abdomen. This is because the DXA is a very low-powered x-ray and it cannot penetrate through these individuals. A manual estimate (in pounds) will be provided according to area volume to the client on the day of their test.

** The DEXA Total Body Scan does NOT include the clinical evaluation for Osteopenia and Osteoporosis. The bone density information provided by the DEXA Total Body Scan includes a TOTAL density (strength) rating of the entire amount of bone tissue in your body and should NOT be used to aid in the diagnosis of fracture risk or bone health. If you would like to add the clinical evaluation for Osteopenia and Osteoporosis to the DEXA Total Body Scan, there is an extra fee, and a review session with a provider is required by law.

HOW DOES THE DEXA SCAN MEASURE BODY COMPOSITION?

The DEXA uses low-powered X-RAY beams to evaluate body tissues carefully. The intensity is far less than diagnostic x-ray studies, and the DEXA Scan only takes about 6 to 8 minutes to complete.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE A DEXA BODY SCAN?

Recommendations will vary based on individual wellness status and goals, but the DEXA can be utilized 4 to 6 times per year in 60 to 90-day evaluation increments to stay on top of your body’s physiological changes during lifestyle adjustments.

What Information Will I Receive from the DEXA Scan?

See a DEXA Body Scan sample report here to see exactly how the report will look and the information you will receive with this test. The information provided by the DEXA Body Scan can unlock new levels of health and wellness in the hands of the right providers and care team.

CAN I USE MY HSA CARD TO PAY FOR THE DEXA SCAN?

DXA Body Testing FAQs

Do I need to provide any information about myself prior to my DXA Body Scan Appointment?
Yes, there is a pre-screening form which is required no later than 12 hours prior to your appointment. You may find this pre-screening form for your reference HERE.

Can I consume alcohol prior to my DXA Body Scan?
No. The DXA Body Scan is most accurate when alcohol is not present in the system. Please do not drink 12 hours prior to your appointment.
How long is the DXA Body Scan Appointment?
The DXA Body Scan takes approximately 6 to 8 minutes to complete, but our staff blocks a minimum of 15 minutes to recap the results with you. So that you don't feel rushed, please set aside at least 30 minutes in your schedule for this service.
Should I avoid drinking water prior to my DXA Body Scan?
No. It’s highly suggested to come properly hydrated for your DXA Body Scan. Please hydrate appropriately, but do not consume more than 30 ounces of water less than 30-minutes prior to your DEXA scan.
Does the DXA Body Scan have a Weight Limit?
Yes, the DXA Body Scan does have a weight limit of 350lbs. If you weigh over 350lbs, please schedule a consultation with us. Liquivida® has solutions to help you reduce your body fat so you can experience the DXA Scan and continue improving your wellness with a full understanding of your body’s composition.
What if I don’t fit inside the Imaging Window?
If you have broad shoulders, a really muscular physique, or high body fat, your full frame may not fit inside the DXA Imaging Window. If this happens to be the case, we may have to leave your left arm or left leg outside of the imaging window in order to conduct the complete body scan. Please note that the DEXA will only measure the anatomy that lies within the imaging window, so it will automatically transpose the data from the appendages measured into the ones that were left outside of the window in your DEXA report.
Can I eat prior to my DXA Body Scan?
No. Please refrain from eating any food two (2) hours prior to your appointment.
If I don’t completely fit within the Imaging Window, how will it affect the data?
It doesn't! The DXA is super smart, and it will "mirror" the data collected from the right side of your body into the parts of your body on the left side that is left outside of the imaging window. The information is still accurate, as most people's left and right sides are usually only within +/- 0.5lb difference.
Can I exercise prior to my DXA Body Scan?
No. The DXA Body Scan is most accurate when the body is in a state of rest. Please do not exercise less than 4 hours prior to your appointment.
When will I get my results?
Your results will be immediately available via e-mail for you on the date of your appointment after we conduct the scan. A brief result review will be conducted after the test is completed, but no consultation or nutrition plan is included with this review. Consultation and nutrition program upgrades are available and should be discussed with Heather prior to or during your appointment.
