How to Update Your Skincare Routine for Younger, Healthier Skin

by Liquivida Lounge on Sep 30, 2020 3:39:57 PM

We all want to age like fine wine, but do we really treat our skin like we care about it? Having healthy skin takes a bit of work, and with all the different anti-aging products, treatments, and nutrients to consider, learning how to care for your skin can seem a bit daunting. Luckily we’re here to help you navigate your way on your skincare journey. Here are our tips for younger, healthier-looking skin.

How to Update Your Skincare Routine for Younger, Healthier Skin-2

Moisturized Skin is Happy Skin

Let’s start with our simplest tip: wear moisturizer. The skin is the largest organ in the human body, and it’s one of the most susceptible to damage. The main use of moisturizers is to protect your skin from environmental damage. The sun’s UV rays, hot showers, cold air, all of these things wear down our skin by making it dry, cracked, and wrinkled. When we apply moisturizer to our faces, the moisturizer helps to hold water on the surface of our skin and draw water into our skin’s layers. Hydrated skin looks younger, brighter, fuller, and less wrinkled. But that’s not all! The right moisturizer will also help your skin cells repair itself and stimulate blood circulation in the face. When you have good blood circulation, your skin will look healthy.

Check your products’ ingredients before you apply them to your face. The best anti-aging moisturizers contain Vitamins A, B5, C, or E. But it’s also important to look for moisturizers that contain SPF to help block out the sun’s harmful UV radiation.

Water, Your Liver, and Your Skin

Staying hydrated is a crucial part of good overall health, and its no different with your skin. The key to this lies in the liver. A healthy liver means healthy skin.

Everything that we eat and drink is processed in our livers. The liver is our greatest asset in detoxing our bodies. When our livers are dehydrated, it makes it harder to flush out waste. And when that happens, our bodies will try to detox in other ways: including through our skin. We’re more prone to issues like acne when our livers aren’t functioning well. Drinking water helps our livers stay healthy, which in turn helps our skin stay healthy.

Stress Takes a Toll on Our Skin

Didn’t expect stress one to be on this list? When I started my own skincare journey, I didn’t expect stress to be a huge factor in skin health either. But keeping your stress in check is just as important in your skincare routine as moisturizing.

Some people break out with acne or rashes when they’re stressed. And people with rosacea or eczema might notice their skin acting up when they’re stressed out. There are a number of reasons for this. First is that stress can cause our bodies to release more cortisol, which makes our skin oily, clogs pores, and causes breakouts. Next is the fact that stress can affect negatively affect the proteins in our skin, making it harder to retain water or maintain elasticity. Dry skin without elasticity means a higher chance of developing wrinkles. And finally, when we’re stressed out, we’re less likely to sleep well. No sleep means under-eye bags.

So what can we do to reduce our stress? Sometimes de-stressing is easier said than done, especially at a time when so many of us are coping with isolation, health issues, and income concerns. But there are a few things we can do to wind down:

  • Exercise.
  • Practice self-care.
  • Take time to enjoy relaxing hobbies.
  • Connect with family and friends.
  • Meditate.
  • Express your feelings either to someone you trust or through art.
  • If possible, speak to a therapist.

 Nutrition and Your Skin

People say you are what you eat, but it’s probably more accurate to say that we’re only as healthy as the stuff we put in our bodies. If all you’re putting into your body is over-processed food with little to no nutrients, your skin is going to take a big hit.

One of the most important things you need to consider is antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight off the damage caused by free radicals that harm your skin cell, making them a powerful anti aging tool. Vitamins C, E, and A are rich antioxidants that are found in food like strawberries, oranges, nuts, spinach, broccoli, fish, and dairy products. When possible, try to go organic. We also recommend including a nutrient-rich vitamin IV drip in your routine to pack more punch.

Bad nutrition leads to bad skin. Refined carbs (like white bread, pastries, candies, and corn syrup) cause glycation, which is a major factor in premature aging. Keep sugary snacks as an occasional treat to keep your skin looking healthy.

Humidify Humidify Humidify!

We already talked about moisturizers, but another tool you should be using to keep your skin looking hydrated and healthy is a humidifier, especially if you live somewhere cold. When most people think of a humidifier, they associate it with being sick. After all, humidifiers are great to use when your sinuses are acting up. But their positive effect on the skin makes them great anti-aging tools for anyone looking to add some more punch to their skincare routine.

Dry air strips your skin of oils and makes it easier for our faces to get irritated. Putting a humidifier in areas of your home that you use the most is a simple but highly effective way of keeping your skin looking happy and healthy.
